So I’m aware that I’m a little late for this one, as beauty favourite posts are generally done the first week of January. But I figure it will still serve helpful as lots of these products are still used in my everyday routine, and are still available in stores.
As titled, this post will be me discussing all of my makeup favourites from the year 2016. Please note that this is a list of personal favourites which cater to my skin & the way I do my own makeup. I have lots of other product favourites in my kit that are more universal for my clients with oily, combo skin, etc. I will go through each category in order of how I apply them to the face. In some categories it was super difficult to pick one holy grail item, so I will give you 2 of my picks. Also, in a couple of categories I will give a drugstore & high end option.
Let’s get started! First item to discuss? Face Primer!
I had a difficult time choosing between The Porefessional by Benefit & Pore no More by dr.brandt primers. They are both very similar in what they claim to do, as both strive to minimize the look of pores & mattify the face. I think that if you have oilier skin you will probably enjoy The Porefessional more, as it tends to absorb the oils on the face a little better. I personally have dry skin however, and both work well for me if I use a super hydrating moisturizer before I apply them.
Next step – Let’s move on to Foundation. Foundation can be one of the trickiest products to fall in love with. Everyone’s skin is so different, and a foundation is such a personal item in your makeup bag.
I have 2 favourites this year that worked for me, which are the MAC Pro Longwear foundation & the Rimmel Lasting Finish Foundation. Now hands down, my MAC Pro Longwear is my absolute favourite. It gives off a nice natural finish with medium coverage, and when you top it with a great powder, it sets on the skin beautifully.
Now my Rimmel Lasting Finish Foundation is a very close second – and for the price? You can’t beat it. Now I do recommend going a shade lighter with this one as it can oxidize a bit on the skin. But it also gives off a really nice natural finish and provides light – medium coverage.
Concealer is next on the list – and let me tell you, there were some really amazing options that came out this past year. I think every single beauty guru was a fan of the Tarte Shape Tape, but since I just received mine I’m going to stick with my 2 go-tos in 2016. My Nars Creamy Radiant Concealer was great for brightening my under eyes and concealing any darkness. I also did not find that it creased on me when set with a good powder. That being said, Maybelline is killing it with their concealers, and not just for a drugstore product but even compared to higher end items. My favourite from Maybelline is their Age Rewind Concealer. I use the Neutralizer shade, which is a nice yellowy concealer, also great for under eyes & concealing darkness.
Now it’s important to find a good setting powder to top your face after foundation. Once again, hands down, MAC was my savior in 2016. The MAC Mineralize Skin Finish powders would keep my foundation in place from morning to night, and I rarely needed to touch up throughout the day when I was wearing them. The MAC Pro Longwear Foundation paired with the MAC Mineralize Skin Finish powder has been a match made in heaven for my skin. It provides me just the right amount of hydration while keeping me matte.
I don’t do much bronzing on my face because I am so fair, but when I feel the need to warm up my skin a little bit – I usually gravitate towards these 2 options. The Too Faced Sweet Hearts Bronzer in the shade Sweet Tea is absolutely stunning. It does have a sheen to it, so if you are on the oilier side it may not be for you. But I find the tones suit my fair skin very nicely. The Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer is also a must have in my opinion. Besides the fact that it smells like a Pina Colada – it is so smooth and buttery (hence the name). It’s also more on the matte side for those who prefer a matte finish but still give off a little sheen which provides a “glow from within” look.
Contouring has been all the rage now for the past couple of years, and I my absolute favourite product to create definition would be the Lise Watier Wet/Dry Powders in her sculpting trio. The middle shade has nice grey undertones that work perfectly for creating a shadow on your face without looking muddy. Now this was a limited edition product in her Fall collection, but I thought I would include it anyway as I’m sure her Spring/Summer collection will include something similar.
** UPDATE : THE TRIO IS NOW A PERMANENT PRODUCT IN HER COLLECTION! **
Blush is the one item in your collection that you generally don’t want to be too pigmented, as it can be very difficult to blend if it is. My perfect blush is for sure the Too Faced Sweet Hearts blush in the shade Candy Glow. It has a beautiful sheen that blends onto the apples of the cheek perfectly. It also is very complimentary on different skin tones, and doesn’t take a lot of effort to make it look perfect.
Now, Anastasia Beverly Hills completely changed the game when it comes to eye shadows this year. It’s rare that a powder formula can provide so much pigment without a primer or cream shadow base. The Modern Renaissance palette gave me life this year, and was on my recommendation list for all who asked me about investing in a new eye shadow palette.
I use a pencil eyeliner every day, and if I am looking for something that will blend nicely with my shadows and have lots of staying power, I always go for my liners from Lise Watier. All the colours I have tried have been phenomenal, Gold/Black and Midnight Black being 2 of my favourites.
Liquid liners have failed me immensely this year. I think I tried every single one possible, and the only one I came across that I love was by the Sephora Brand. It dries quickly, doesn’t smudge, and is a nice semi-matte black.
I always struggle with mascara as I have very tiny bottom lashes, which I like to make look as long as possible since I have next to none. I have had some luck with a few different ones this year, but the Tarteist mascara by Tarte was my absolute favourite. I was shocked that I liked it as much as I did since I’ve tried mascaras with a similar brush head and I have never been a fan. But this one really gets in between the lashes, separates, & elongates.
Highlighting the high points of the face would have to be one of my favourite makeup trends from the last few seasons. I have tried several different powder & liquid illuminators and have had luck this year with quite a few. But my 2 holy grail highlighters would definitely be MAC’s Soft & Gentle, & of course no highlighter favourites list would be complete without Becca X Jaclyn Hill’s Champagne Pop. Soft & Gentle provides a beautiful luminous finish to the skin, while Champagne Pop gives off more of a high shine finish. Both are essentials in my collection.
Next on the list is bold brows! My favourite product for personal use is my Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz. I jump between Dark Brown & Ebony depending on the look I am aiming for. Now unfortunately, my Brow Wiz was MIA when I was taking photos, but I’m happy to report it has been located! The nice thing about this product is that you can create as natural or as glam of a brow as you like, and it almost always will come out flawless.
This year the lips were all about liquid lipsticks that were both bold & matte. Now I would say the key to a liquid lipstick being a favourite would be a formula that is not patchy, does not dry out the lips too much, & one that is long lasting. I have pretty much tried out every liquid lipstick formula known to mankind, and would have to say the following 3 would be my choices.
I was surprised with how much I loved the Anastasia Liquid Lipsticks because I have not heard a ton about them. I have lots of her shades but my favourite from the collection is Soft Lilac. It’s a beautiful light violet colour, that is very complimentary and makes your teeth look super white. If I want a lipstick that will last all day with minimal touch ups, I go for this one.
At first, I was not sure how I felt about the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks because they glide on a little easier than others I had tried, and I wasn’t sure if this would leave them looking glossy. But to my surprise they really do dry matte, and they are the ones that dry out my lips the least. My favourite shade is Mother, which is a bold, bright mauve.
I love the Stila Liquid Lipstick in Baci because of its unique colour. It’s a mauve with purple & grey undertones yet it almost could be considered a nude. This is the first liquid lipstick that I’ve ever had to repurchase because of how much usage it gets. It also goes on the lips nicely and one coat usually does it.
Now my personal favourite beauty product that I could not live without is of course my lashes. I have worn lashes almost every single day since I was in high school, and have tried almost every brand and style possible. My favourite lashes are hands down, the Siren lashes from House of Lashes.
These lashes are so beautiful, and because they have a clear thin band, they are easy to apply. They are a glam lash, yet because of how wispy and separated they are, remain somewhat natural looking. They blend in so nicely with my own lashes, and I can use them several times on myself if I take proper care of them.
Now last but certainly not least, just to finish everything off, my MAC Fix Plus spray. This stuff is amazing. Not only does it set the face – but it hydrates, primes, & keeps everything looking perfect. If throughout the day you are feeling like your makeup is looking a little patchy, you can spray a little of this on and it magically makes everything look seamless and perfect once again.
So there you have it, a list of my top beauty picks from 2016 that I will continue to love and enjoy throughout 2017. Now please keep in mind as I mentioned that everyone is different, so something I love you might hate or vice versa. But I truly believe all of the products listed above are amazing, and I highly recommend giving them a try.
